Can Mormons Drink Alcohol? (No, And This Is Why…)
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and illegal drugs are harmful to the body and should not be used. The Word of Wisdom, a health code revealed to Joseph Smith in 1833, prohibits the use of these substances.
Church leaders have counseled against drinking alcohol. In general, Latter-day Saints are encouraged to avoid alcohol. However, the Church does not prohibit its members from drinking alcohol.
Some Mormons choose to drink alcohol in moderation. Others abstain from alcohol completely. The decision of whether or not to drink is a personal one.
